A major breakthrough in deep exploration of gold deposits in Jiaodong, Shandong, has a world-class impact

The gold deposits in Shandong Province are mainly distributed in Jiaodong area, mainly including Sanshandao fault zone, Jiaojia fault zone and Zhaoping fault zone in the northwest of Jiaodong, followed by Qixia Penglai gold metallogenic belt and Muping Rushan gold metallogenic belt.
Since 2011, more than 70 large, medium and above gold deposits have been discovered in Jiaodong area, of which all large and super large gold deposits are distributed in the "Laizhou Zhaoyuan Gold Deposit Packaged Exploration Area in Shandong Province". Among them, the super large gold deposits with reserves of more than 100 tons include the gold deposits in the northern sea area of Sanshan Island in Laizhou City (470.47 tons), Xiling Gold Mine in Laizhou City (382.58 tons), Shaling Gold Mine in Laizhou City (309.93 tons), Tengjia Gold Mine in Laizhou City (206 tons), Shuiwangzhuang Gold Mine in Zhaoyuan City (170.543 tons), and Xinli Village Gold Mine in Laizhou City (141.81 tons). There are nearly 10 gold producing areas with reserves of more than 50 tons but less than 100 tons, including 59.4 tons of new gold in the Taishang mining area of Zhaoyuan City, Shandong Province, 50 tons of new gold in Linglong Gold Mine, and 60 tons of new gold in Sanshandao Gold Mine. In addition, Liaoshang large gold deposit with resource reserves of 69 tons was newly discovered in Mouping District, Yantai City, breaking the previous situation of "only seeing the stars but not the moon" in eastern Jiaodong, and expanding the prospecting scope of Jiaodong ore concentration area. The major achievements in deep gold exploration have achieved a historic breakthrough in gold prospecting in China, forming three thousand ton gold fields represented by Sanshandao, Jiaojia and Linglong, making Jiaodong the third largest gold mining area in the world and stabilizing its position as the largest gold production base in China. At present, there are 3694 tons of gold reserves in Jiaodong area. In 2016, the gold output in Jiaodong area was 71 tons, accounting for about one sixth of the national gold output (453 tons).
While making major breakthroughs in ore prospecting, the scientific and technological innovation ability of geological prospecting has also been significantly improved. First, the understanding of metallogenic theory has been deepened. The research on the prospecting and metallogenic model of deep large and super large gold deposits in the Jiaobei gold concentration area, Shandong Province, has been carried out, and the "thermal uplift extension" metallogenic theory and stepwise metallogenic model of Jiaodong type gold deposits have been established, which won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award; Secondly, it has enriched the theory of gold ore prospecting and prediction. For the first time, it has created a "trinity" geological model of gold ore prospecting and prediction based on "metallogenic geological body, metallogenic structure and metallogenic structural plane, and metallogenic characteristics" in Jiaodong Gold Mine, which has greatly enriched and developed the theoretical system of gold ore prospecting and exploration in China. Third, we have innovated the gold ore prospecting method, systematically summarized the lateral ambush law of vein ore bodies, and significantly improved the effect of deep ore prospecting and exploration. Fourth, the gold exploration technology has made a major substantive breakthrough. The first deep drilling for rock gold exploration in China with a hole depth of 4006.17m has created a precedent for deep exploration of metal minerals in China. Fifthly, remarkable achievements have been made in the construction of scientific research platforms and talent teams. "Key Laboratory of Gold Mineralization Process and Resource Utilization of the Ministry of Land and Resources", "Key Laboratory of Metal Mineral Mineralization Process and Resource Utilization of Shandong Province", post doctoral research workstation, academician expert workstation, etc., one person has won the Li Siguang Geoscience Science and Technology Award, two people have been approved as special experts of Taishan Scholars, and many people have won the Young Geological Science and Technology Award of the Geological Society of China.
In addition, in the deep ore prospecting breakthrough in Jiaodong, successful experience has been achieved in implementing new mechanisms to achieve ore prospecting breakthrough. The major breakthrough in deep exploration of gold deposits in Jiaodong is a successful example of the practice of the new geological prospecting mechanism of "public welfare first, commercial follow-up, fund convergence, integrated exploration and rapid breakthrough". Provincial and ministerial cooperation has played an important role in the deep ore prospecting in Jiaodong. The central financial department has specifically improved the degree of basic geological work and research and played a leading role. The provincial financial fund has set up a special fund for "integrated exploration", further reducing exploration risks, effectively stimulating enterprise investment, and at the same time increasing technical research and expert guidance. It is the joint effort of the ministry and the province, and the combination of industry, education and research that has contributed to the achievement of major achievements.
The great breakthrough in deep exploration of gold deposits in Jiaodong area shows the huge resource potential in deep exploration. The national mineral resources potential evaluation predicts that the shallow gold resources in Jiaodong area are 3972 tons at a depth of 2000 meters. The results of the prospecting prediction project in the integrated exploration area show that the Zhaoping fault zone in the three major metallogenic fault zones (Sanshandao fault zone, Jiaojia fault zone and Zhaoping fault zone) in Jiaodong has only 2160 tons of gold resources predicted in the Damoqujia Shangzhuang section, and has been verified by drilling at the depth of Guojiabu and Dayingezhuang, showing the great potential for deep prospecting.
